1 Thessalonians 4:13 says “We believe that Jesus died and rose again, so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him”. What is meant by fallen asleep in Jesus? It just means they died a Christian. And bring with Jesus to where? To heaven, when Jesus comes back.
There is someone in this life who will commit himself to you. Who’ll stay committed to you even after you’ve died – Jesus. Let me tell you about him.
The bottom line of this part of the Bible is that if you trust in Jesus, then after you die you’ll come back to life like he did. This’s how it works:
1) When you trust Jesus you become united or joined to him. You see this unity in a marriage. You don’t just share the house and car and your money. You share life, your problems, children, your bodies, your most intimate moments. In a good marriage it’s as though the two people become one. Trusting Jesus is like that only more intimate. When the Bible tries to describe how intimate, it gets lost for words – it’s a bit tongue tied, because we wouldn’t understand- we’ve never experienced that level of intimacy. But it says the closest thing to it is marriage, with Jesus in the groom role and Christians as the bride. So that’s the first thing- when you trust in Jesus you become united with him.
2) If you’re united with him- what happened to him will happen to you. You see this in marriage as well. What happens to your partner will affect you too. If one of you has a problem, or sickness, or you go broke, it affects the other one. But it works with the good things as well. If Rick gets a windfall, Ronnie will benefit. But if one of gets a promotion, if one of you has got a good relationship with your parents, the other partner is affected. It’s the same way with Jesus. If you’re joined to him, it’s so intimate that whatever happens to him… will happen to you too.
3) Jesus came back to life after he died, If you’re united with him when you die, you will too. It’s pretty simple. When Jesus died he didn’t stay dead. He came back to life, and he lives for all time in heaven. If you trust in him, if you’re a Christian, you’re united to him so intimately that the same thing happens to you. You’ll come back to life, and live with him for all time in heaven. People often say to ministers; “But I don’t want to go to heaven. It’ll be boring, dreadful place, just angels and harps and clouds- there’s nothing there.” They’re actually right in one way. The Bible says that will be all sorts of things that are absent in heaven- tears, sadness, suffering, disability, shame, regret, guilt, death. Dreadful place isn’t it? No. Just life to the full like you’ve never known it before. So that’s the 3rd thing. Jesus came back to life after he died and if you’re united with him when you die, you will too.
The commitment that Jesus makes to his people is for eternity. Even after you die the relationship goes on. Jesus is faithful to you for eternity. He stays committed to you even after you die.
Today’s a terrible day for Rick & Ronnie. But Cameron’s death reminds us of the relationship Jesus is offering you that goes on even after you die. Today’s a good time to ask ourselves. What’ll happen after I die? Have you got someone to trust for eternity?

You Are My Son
You are my son
The voice from heaven is clear.
This chosen one
Announces God’s kingdom near.
He speaks with authority:
Sickness healed and the demons flee.
Turn and trust now in the gospel.
Jesus, God’s precious son
Jesus, God’s chosen one
Jesus, God’s suffering child
Taking our sin, upon the tree
Bringing us peace, setting us free
For he brings God’s kingdom in.
Speaking a word
He stills the wind and the waves.
Who is this one?
His frightened friends all exclaim
He raises the dead to life.
Thousands fed on a mountain side
Who is this? Is he the Christ?
Jesus, coming as king
Lord above everything
Jesus, the great Son of Man.
Taking our sin, upon the tree
Bringing us peace, setting us free
For he brings God’s kingdom in.
Taking our sin
He died the death that was mine.
Servant of men
The suffering one: the divine
He rises up from the grave
Conquering sin so that he can save.
This is God redeeming man
Jesus, you are our King
Praise and honour we sing.
Jesus, our glorious king.
Taking our sin, upon the tree
Bringing us peace, setting us free
For you bring God’s kingdom in.

Put Your Hope in the Lord (Psalm 130)
Lord, out of the depths I cry
Lord, hear my voice
Hear my cry for mercy
If you were to show to me
A record of sin, O Lord who could stand?
My soul waits for the Lord
More that the Morning
Put your hope in the Lord,
His unfailing love
He will redeem you for sure
And lift you up
He will forgive you for your sin
And he will comfort you
Put your hope in God, the Lord!

Our Saviour King
Tears more pure than mine, Jesus shed for me.
Blood worth more than gold stained that wretched tree.
A love of matchless wonder.
A heart of endless grace.
A life of unspoilt beauty.
Was sacrificed in my place.
And so with transformed hearts
We praise our Saviour King
The Christ who overcame the world.
With all our hearts
We praise our Saviour King:
God’s righteous Saviour King.
